It isn't. What rucking actually trains that walking doesn't
Add 20-30% of your bodyweight to a normal walk and the demand on your body changes in ways that aren't obvious until you try it. Your posterior chain — glutes, hamstrings, lower back, upper traps — has to stabilize a load with every step, turning what looks like cardio into something closer to a moving isometric strength session. Where it beats — and loses to — running
For anyone who's given up running because of knee pain or shin splints, rucking offers a genuinely lower-impact way to build cardiovascular base fitness, and the numbers back this up in a rough sense: ground reaction forces during a loaded ruck at a brisk pace sit meaningfully below those of running at an equivalent heart rate, even with the extra weight, because there's no flight phase where both feet leave the ground. That's the entire injury-prevention case for rucking over running, and it's a legitimate one. Where it loses is in raw cardiovascular adaptation speed.
